Class Descriptions

Balance Classes:

  • Eight-Week Fall Prevention Program (45 minutes)
    This class incorporates various static and ambulation drills, both seated and standing, to equip residents with a comprehensive plan for proactive fall-prevention. It meets twice a week for eight weeks. Call the Fitness Office if you are interested in participating: (781) 372-0057.

Dance Classes:

  • Folk Dancing (1 hour)
    In this class participants learn simple village dances accompanied by music of Europe, the Middle East and the Americas, along with discussion of the culture and history of each region. Dance classes promote balance, agility and memory.
  • Line Dancing (1 hour)
    This class teaches various dances, such as Foxtrot, Waltz, Cha Cha, and Tango. Music includes Big Band, Swing, Country and Contemporary. Dance classes promote balance, agility, and memory.

Gentle Stretch and Balance (30 minutes)

  • This gentle, relaxing chair-based fitness class incorporates modified yoga postures and balancing exercises to increase flexibility, stability, and balance. The benefits of this program include reduced blood pressure, increased joint mobility, and improved posture.

Gentle Yoga

  • This beginner class incorporates a variety of standing, sitting and lying yoga poses that will enhance your flexibility, mobility and balance, while producing a deep sense of rest and relaxation. Participants must be able to get down and up from the floor.

The Joy of Movement (1 hour)

  • This class offers an exercise program for people with movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. The exercises are designed to ease movement difficulties such as slowness, freezing, lack of energy and gait problems while improving posture, balance, flexibility and overall functionality. This class challenges participants in a supportive and collegial environment.

Outdoor Walk (2 hours)

  • These pre-planned, guided walks off the Brookhaven campus offer an opportunity for vigorous outdoor activity in a variety of beautiful settings. Each trail is approximately two miles and 45 minutes in duration. The Brookhaven bus transports participants to and from each destination. These walks are offered each spring and fall.

Strengthening Classes, Levels I, II and III:

  • Total Fitness – Level I (1 hour) — This class is designed to strengthen all the major muscle groups through the use of dumbbells and resistance bands. Cardiovascular, stretching, and balance components are incorporated into this exercise routine.
  • Total Fitness – Level II (45 minutes) — This class is a shorter version of Total Fitness, Level 1.
  • Total Fitness – Level III (30 minutes) — This class is designed to increase range of motion, flexibility, and strength. It endeavors to accommodate residents whose physical limitations require greater attention and a slower pace.

Supervised Fitness

  • The Fitness Room is staffed by a member of the Fitness Staff to offer instruction and assistance, and to answer any questions residents may have regarding use of the exercise equipment.

Tai Chi (45 minutes)

  • This class focuses on stretching and step-by-step instruction of the basic stances, postures and footwork of the Yang style short form. This ancient system of exercise helps improve coordination, balance, breathing and flexibility, while helping to regulate blood pressure and decrease stress.

Wii Bowling (2 hours)

  • The Wii (pronounced “we”) is a fun, physically engaging, interactive video game which uses a handheld pointing device that detects movement and speed. When the users move, the corresponding characters on a TV screen move. The Brookhaven Wii Bowling League consists of teams of two that play against each other in a competitive and fun environment. Join the league or come cheer on your team.

Zumba Gold (30 minutes)

  • Zumba is a joyous, energetic aerobic fitness class which combines Latin and international music in dance routines to a combination of fast and slow rhythms.

Lower Body Strength and Balance (30 minutes)

  • This class is designed to increase balance by strengthening the lower body and incorporating various balance drills, both seated and standing. It is geared toward those residents whose physical limitations require greater attention and a slower pace.
